In 1996, the United States of the World and the Fondazione Mediterraneo established the Mediterranean Awards (with various categories) that are granted every year to eminent personalities from the worlds of arts and culture, politics and science and social disciplines, whose actions have contributed to reducing tensions, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values in the Greater Mediterranean.
This Award is considered one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world.

Euromed Award

In 2005 the Fondazione Mediterraneo in partnership with the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures - of which the FM is Head of the Italian Network - decided to launch a special category of the ‘Mediterranean Award’ entitled the Euro-Med Award for the Dialogue Between Cultures.
This decision was taken unanimously by the Heads of the 35 National Networks during the meeting held in Barcelona on the 27th of November 2005 to celebrate the “Year of the Mediteranean” and the tenth anniversary of the Euromed Partnership.

 

 

INTERNATIONAL BAND - 2017
GERMANY

International Band: in cooperation with 9 professional and amateur musicians from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Palestine and Burkina Faso, “Banda Internationale” has produced a concert programme combining music from the countries of origin of all musicians involved. The target of this project is not limited to refugee musicians, but they want to enhance more than music their own commitment and the commitment of their fellow citizens to help refugees’ transition to life in Germany..

CAPOEIRA 4 REFUGEES - 2015

Capoeira 4 Refugees (C4R) is a UK registered charity running projects in Syria, Palestine and Jordan.C4R uses capoeira, consisting of music, sport and play, to strengthen fractured communities broken apart by war and forced to flee their homes. Its programmes promote inter-and intra cultural dialogue, tolerance, respect and solidarity.

ZOUKAK THEATRE COMPANY & CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - 2014
LEBANON

Zoukak theater was established in 2006 to develop a platform for creating and research focused on theater and arts and aiming to create interconnected languages interpretive practices. The project is based on the need to develop a business continuity for their drama and the belief that this practice is a political and social engagement.
Zoukak leading theatrical interventions with incarcerated youth, disabled children, women victims of domestic violence and other marginalized groups in our society, while continuing to work with people affected by the war directly or indirectly way.

HOUSE OF TALES AND MUSIC - 2013
JORDAN

The House of Tales and Music (Jordan) represented by Rabeea Najm Al-Din Al-Naser is the winner of the Euro-Med Award 2013-2014. The Award Ceremony took place in Vilnius in the presence of the Heads of the 42 National Networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation and was attended by Andreu Claret, Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation, and Michele Capasso, President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo who presented the award to Rabeea Najm Al-Din Al-Naser.

TEATRO VALLE OCCUPATO - 2012
ITALY

The Awards Ceremony was held in Cyprus on 10 November 2012 at the UNESCO Auditorium, University of Nicosia in the presence of the Heads of the National Networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation. Participants at the ceremony included Andreu Claret, Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation, and Michele Capasso, President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, who handed this accolade to Sylvia De Fanti and Simona dell’Acqua, representing the Teatro Valle Occupato Theatre Group. This year, the theme for the Euromed Award was “Youths for change, social justice and co-development”.
President Michele Capasso expressed his satisfaction for the acknowledgement emphasizing that the nomination of the “Teatro Valle Occupato” was launched by the Fondazione Mediterraneo itself and has been agreed by the members of the 43 Euromed member countries.

DEVELOPMENT NO BORDERS - 2011
EGYPT

Development No Borders is the winner of the 2011-2012 EuroMed Award. 
The Awards Ceremony took place at the Town Hall in Krakow on 22 October 2011 in the presence of ambassadors from 43 countries belonging to the Union of the Mediterranean and Members of the Board of Governors from the Anna Lindh Foundation.
This year, the Euromed Award chose the theme of “For Citizenship and for Freedom” and it was accepted by Amr Shaaban, Chairman of Development No borders, who expressed his gratitude for this acknowledgement in addition to explaining the activities of the association.

ECOPEACE FRIENDS OF THE EARTH MIDDLE EAST - 2010

Founded by environmentalists coming from Palestine, Jordan and Israel and by members of Friends of the Earth International, the largest organization of environmentalists in the world, FoEME is an organization of civil society, which carries out research projects and promotes dialogue beyond borders for the ecological sustainability in the region, fair sharing of Jordan Valley and fair peace.

COMBATANTS FOR PEACE - 2009
ISRAEL - PALESTINE

“Combatants for Peace”, a civil movement jointly established by Palestinian and Israeli individuals, is the Winner of the Euro-Med Award for the Dialogue between Cultures 2009. The Award, which is bestowed and voted by the members of the Anna Lindh Foundation’s networks of civil society present in forty-three countries, recognizes this year the contribution of organizations and individuals in promoting a culture of peace and coexistence in the Euro-Mediterranean Region.

RIMA MAROUN - 2008
LIBANO

The theme chosen by the Jury is “Dialogue through Art” and the Award has been granted to the Lebanese photographer Rima Maroun because she communicates, through her works, a message of peace and coexistence. Her compositions, with life images, even of wounded subjects or of victims of the endless civil war that troubles Lebanon, reflect an unusual sensitiveness, whose highest point of expression can be found in the exhibition “Murmures”: 14 multiple works where children and women are portrayed in front of a wall. A symbol that does not only mean “obstacle” but, above all, a spur to overcome the challenges everyone is confronted with.

RODI KRATSA TSAGAROPOULOU E JAN WILLEMS - 2007
GREECE - HOLLAND

The two ex aequo winners for this edition, Rodi Kratsa Tsagaropoulou and Jan Willems, have been working at two different but equally important levels in favour of women empowerment: Mr. Willems at the grassroots level, through his artistic talent and activities; and Ms. Kratsa at the institutional level, promoting equal opportunities policies in the European Parliament and in the Euro‑Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.

MONASTERO MAR MUSA - 2006
SYRIA

The Prize was awarded to the Monastery for its contribution in promoting mutual respect among population believing in different religions and creeds. Deir Mar Musa is a religious community founded by father Paolo Dall’Oglio in 1991. Its aim is to establish and keep up positive relations between Christians and Muslims. In the community there are men and women coming from different Countries and having different faiths who live the mutual experience to share the richness of their diversity through dialogue.

BARCELONA PROCESS - 2005

The Fondazione Mediterraneo has granted the ’Mediterranean Award for Dialogue between Cultures 2005’ to Barcelona Process on the occasion of the 10 th anniversary of partnership agreements. Just to emphasize its symbolic meaning, the acknowledgement has been attributed to the heads of the 35 national networks of Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation as auspicious for the commitment to be undertaken by these actors on behalf of the European Union and of the 35 Euro-Mediterranean Countries in a difficult and indispensable action for peace.

Architecture

in memory of ARATA ISOZAKI - 2024
Architect, JAPAN

for his ability to combine tradition and modernity. A pupil of Kenzō Tange, in 1963 he founded the ‘Arata Isozaki Atelier’, which later became ‘Arata Isozaki & Associates’ and received numerous international awards. His works include the new monumental exit of the Uffizi in Florence, the Palasport Olimpico in Turin, and one of the three new skyscrapers in Milan's modern CityLife district: the Dritto.
He was a member of the Building Council of Japan, an honorary member of the Accademia Tiberina in Rome and the American Institute of Architects, an honorary member of the Bund Deutscher Architekten, and a Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

in memory of BALKRISHNA DOSHI - 2024

For having placed the construction of the habitat at the centre of his work: a place where animal and plant species must live together, respecting each other and celebrating life. In Doshi's case, it becomes recurrent to form a microclimate similar to that of a turban worn on the head, an essential solution of great architectural value: spatial on a formal level, constructive on a technical level and symbolic on a poetic level.

Fra i pionieri dell’approccio ecologico in architettura, per la sua multiforme attività ha ottenuto non pochi riconoscimenti anche internazionali.
L’attribuzione a Massimo Pica Ciamarra dell’”edizione speciale” del Premio Mediterraneo per l’Architettura, segnala l’eccezionalità del lungo percorso e testimonia un simultaneo interesse per il suo futuro.

Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho, better known as Oscar Niemeyer (Rio de Janeiro, 15 December 1907 – Rio de Janeiro, 5 December 2012), was a Brazilian architect and one of the most renowned architects of the twentieth century. He worked for many years with Le Corbusier, and, despite advocating utilitarianism in architecture, his creations reflect the use of dynamic “Mediterranean” forms. They are so sensual that many of his admirers saw him as a sculptor of monuments more than an architect.
This award, which was conferred upon him on 10 November 2012, is now made to commemorate his works.

At 105 years old, Vittorio di Pace continues to work indefatigably as an architect on the project he has dreamed about all his life: that of creating an interethnic city.
His life has been based on Love for Life and the “Architect’s Profession”, which unites artistic spirit with curiosity for the world. He has carried out projects in Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, The Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia.
He is a rare example of curiosity and perceptiveness, brimming with enthusiasm for work and wellbeing, as well as being a careful observer of the world and creator of universal architecture without differences or hierarchies.

ZAHA HADID - 2011
Architect - IRAQ

Iraqi by birth, but a Londoner by adoption, Zaha Hadid is gradually but inexorably peppering the landscape of the world with her architectural creations. She is an inspired but refined visionary, whose works have been widely acclaimed in Italy. They include the Afragola High Speed Train Station in Naples and the new project for the Mediterranean Museum in Reggio Calabria or that of the Nuragic and Contemporary Art Museum in Cagliari, as well as the revolutionary and futuristic National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome. Zaha Hadid is a reference point for the Greater Mediterranean on how Architecture can be used as a tool of peace and dialogue.

FABRIZIO CARÒLA - 2005

An architect who, through his talent, has been able to create structures based on the wisdom of ancient tradition in buildings. He has created living spaces that are both primitive and complex, bridging archaic tradition and futuristic space in which the simplicity of techniques is transformed into versatility of execution, clarity and rigour in the use of materials.
Architecture of life and for life, which respects natural environments and satisfies the fundamental need for of serenity and harmony without resorting either to an excess of technology or obsolete technologies. With Fabrizio Caròla, Tèchne strive for freedom leading to the discovery of knowledge embodied in building techniques of the pre-modern tradition and paving the rich way to the rich discovery of contemporary Mediterranean creativity.

CARLO FORESTA - 2024
Professor of Endocrinology at the Medical School of Padua. Since 2001 he has been Director of the UOC of Andrology and of the Centre for Cryopreservation of Male Gametes. Coordinator of the Regional Centre for Patients with Klinefelter Syndrome - ITALY

For his research efforts in recent years, which have addressed the effects of Pfas pollution on human health. These chemicals are widespread: in water, food, food films and coatings, carpets, clothing, dust, wax, cosmetics. This exposure can be at the root of several pathologies: in particular, studies by Prof. Carlo Foresta have shown that pollution by these molecules can lead to testicular and renal tumours, osteoporosis in both youth and adults, alterations in thyroid function, infertility, and increased blood coagulability with consequent onset of cardiovascular pathologies. These studies have also shown how, even at relatively low concentrations, these substances can, especially in the most sensitive populations, such as the younger generation, lead to significant clinical alterations.

The award is conferred in recognition of her exemplary life story, which suggests the portrait of a Woman Physician and Scientist whose skills, over the years, have been tirelessly devoted to clinical and therapeutic care at the most advanced levels, to meet the health needs of highly complex rare patients, and to research activity in a decidedly interdisciplinary perspective that has integrated Clinical Neurology with Basic Neurosciences and, more recently, with Nanosciences and Nano-technologies. Moreover, faithful to her moral commitment of educating her students to Humanistic Medicine and of raising public awareness about the Culture of Common Good in Life Sciences, she has proposed dissemination activities, also of international resonance, on important topics (rare diseases, brain week, women, science and society, etc.) through which she has made her irreplaceable contribution to supporting the knowledge society.

GIACOMO KOCH - 2024
Neurofisiologo e docente all’Università di Ferrara - ITALIA

For his constant commitment to patient care and an uncommon humanity that distinguishes his professional work aimed at helping the weakest through the use of modern technologies.
He is the author of a scientific protocol by which, through transcranial magnetic stimulation, the progression of neurodegenerative diseases is slowed by improving both the clinical parameters of patients and their everyday lives. This is the first time that the effectiveness of noninvasive brain stimulation has been demonstrated, and it was done by a group of scientists from the Fondazione Santa Lucia IRCCS neurorehabilitation hospital in Rome, led by Professor Giacomo Koch, in collaboration with the University of Ferrara. The results of the research, published in Brain, open up new perspectives.

Professor of Internal Medicine, former President of Consiglio Superiore di Sanità - ITALY

Author of more than seven hundred publications in the field of physiopathology, of clinics and therapy, as well as author of three treatises on cardiology, Mario Condorelli contributed to the diffusion of science and research as a basis element for the diagnosis and the cure of manifold pathologies, training an entire generation of doctors and cardiologists. As senator of the Italian Republic he has been proposer of bills for the safeguard of health and for the rights of sick people.

ANTONIO IAVARONE - 2008
Scientist and Associate Professor at the Institute for Cancer Genetic Studies, Columbia University of New York - ITALY

He contributed to the fundamental research on the function of several proteins of the “ld” family in the stem cells and in cancer pathologies increasing the possibilities of cure especially for some typical pathologies of the South Shore of the Mediterranean. From the scientific point of view, it is a high value discovery which opens the possibility to re-program, among others, the nervous cells as a basis for the treatment of serious illnesses.

MARCELLO PIAZZA - 2004
Professor of Infectious Diseases, University Federico II - ITALY

For the work carried out in favour of the Euro-Mediterranean populations. His studies contributed to the reduction of B hepatitis in the world, one of the plague of humanity. He made possible to vaccinate against B hepatitis all the new borns: starting with Italy, the vaccinations are now executed in 151 Nations - including the Euro-Mediterranean area - thus reducing deaths caused by this decease.
